We All Should Have Paid Attention in Greek Class

Back in the 1970s, the PUBLIC high school I attended offered Greek, Latin, and Western Civilization classes as core subjects.

Try finding a public high school in the United States that offers these core subjects in 2021. It's unfortunate we graduate our children and grandchildren with little understanding of the classics.

For example, when scientists talk about a "pandemic," the younger generations think it's a title for a classic horror movie.

Pandemic is a good word. It is a Greek compound word that vividly describes a process of growth.

Pan means "all." Demic is a contraction of the name for the Greek goddess Demeter. Her name  comes from the Greek elements “de” (δε) meaning “earth," and “meter” (μητηρ) meaning “mother." Thus, the word pandemic literally means "all over mother earth."

Pandemic by definition isn't a word for disease. We could have a pandemic of wealth, a pandemic of health, a pandemic of peace, or a pandemic of geese.

Now let me show you something about the danger of elitism. Elites in power are dangerous for the people. They believe they have knowledge that greatly exceeds the populace.
Elitists enjoy taking simple concepts that are easily understood by the general populace and bestow on them fancy words that persuade the populace that "those in control know better than we do."

That's not true.

Elitist arrogance in the corridors of power produces government interventions, introduced with excessive confidence, that often lead to disastrous results for the people. The gap among elitists between what an elitist knows and what an elitist thinks he knows is astronomically higher than the gap in the general populace.

The average citizen is capable of figuring out what is best for him and his family by himself. But the elitist loves to take what can be simply understood and wrap it with bewildering and confusing terms.

Let me illustrate.

Covid-19 (SARS-CoV-2) began in a laboratory in China.

Soon, Covid-19 spread "all over mother earth" (pandemic). However, Covid-19 spread among various nations with differing speeds and intensities.

It hit Britain before it came to South Africa. It hit Brazil after South Africa, but before India. It hit Peru after India.

Rather than just talking to the general populace in easy to understand language, the World Health Organization began changing its language to Greek

Covid in Great Britain became the ALPHA VARIANT.  Covid in South Africa became the BETA VARIANT. Covid in Brazil became the GAMMA VARIANT. Covid in India became the DELTA VARIANT.

You can chart all the VARIANTS on the WHO website

Above my door, as I leave my office is a sign that says ESCHEW OBFUSCATION. In simple language, it means, "avoid confusion." Those in power should communicate with clarity and make sure the populace comprehends.

So, I'll do what the government should be doing:

"Covid-19 can cause serious symptoms among the elderly and those with pre-existing health conditions. However, the risk of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome through reinfection is "very low." That means, once you've had Covid-19 and recovered, your risk of Severe Acutre Respiratory from catching Covid-19 again is very low due to your natural antibodies.
Covid-19 spreads around the nations of the world with various rates of transmission and degrees of intensity. Therefore, reports of severe sickness and death associated with Covid-19 from other nations come to us at different times. Deaths due to Covid-19 as a percentage of a nation's population remain low, but this rate varies according to the general health of a nation's populace. Covid will continue to come to the United States in various waves of Covid from other countries, similar to seasonal flu.
M-RNA vaccines will not prevent anyone in the United States from getting Covid-19 in the future. A vaccine may mitigate Covid symptoms.  Good health and nutrition in people with no pre-existing medical conditions will also mitigate Covid symptoms. Natural antibodies in those already infected with, and recovered from, Covid-19 form a natural barrier against the reoccurance of the disease, similar to a vaccine.
The risk/benefit of receiving a laboratory vaccine against Covid-19 will vary according to one's age, health, and a previous recovery from Covid-19.
Give respect to those who choose to be vaccinated and give respect to those who choose not to be vaccinated. Ivermectin is undergoing peer review scientic testing and may be prescribed to mitigate Covid-19 symptoms.
Covid-19 is a disease that will be around for a long time, and all Americans should pay more attention to their individual health."

I paid attention in Greek class.

Good for you Don.

Wade,

When growing up and didn’t understand something, we’d say: “That’s Greek to me.”
You said in general that Elitist use fancy words to persuade people they know best.

I think some preachers use ‘big words’ to impress the congregation to believe what they’re saying.

Wade Burleson said...

Rex,

Sadly, I agree.

Scott Shaver said...

Every now and then a well placed "big word" saves sentences.

Rex Ray said...

Scott Shaver,

A “big word” may save sentences but my loose the ‘hearer’ if they don’t know what the word means.

I was taught to use words that a fifth-grader could understand.

I thought you might reply to asking you the other day what I asked Bene, or is that out of your ‘pay-grade’?

Scott Shaver said...

Rex:

I agree with you on simple words. My vernacular is closer to a farm boy's than a scholar, but sometimes "when in Rome..."

I am still trying to figure out the exact question you asked Bene.

Doesn't take much to get beyond my "pay grade".

If we keep changing the names, it is harder to track the story. If we keep changing pronouns we can’t tell the story at all.

If the elites keep changing names, it makes it harder to catch them in the lies.

The India Bar Association, having missed the message from the elites about not going after the elites,is suing a WHO doctor for tweeting out that ivermectin should be avoided in May 2021. Because of that Tweet, one of the Indian states took ivermectin out of their protocol this spring, possibly leading to increased deaths (that state had the worst track record in all of India……hmmmmm) In India, a study of HCWs using ivermectin prophylaxis was done in the fall of 2020 that showed a SEVENTY THREE PERCENT decrease in COVID 19 infection among HCW’s. Sorry to yell via typing but that is HUGE. Seems like that would be big news, but….Yet, the WHO and the CDC and FDA are still warning against it. Now, this wouldn’t be because of shareholder status in companies making remdesivir or vaccines or….. Color me cynical.

Trying to find information re: the use of ivermectin as prophylaxis in India during this 2nd wave, I did discover their recommendations re: COVID on their website. They recommend distancing, they recommend hand washing, they recommend throwing away used tissues. They recommend masking only if you have symptoms. In fact, their COVID information posters all have primarily non-masked faces. For people diagnosed with COVID they give out med packets that contain ivermectin.

In a country that is struggling to provide healthcare but have limited resources, seems like they are operating off of good ol’ common sense.

Scott Shaver,

I like your style. My aunt Exie had a twist in that “when in Rome…” She’d say “When in Rome, do as Romans should do.” :)

I’ll rephrase my question to Bene:
Would you agree the ones that killed Jesus didn’t know what they were doing, and the ones that ‘deserted’ Paul which caused his death knew exactly what they were doing?

Stephen prayed: “Lord don’t charge them with this sin…” (Acts 4:16)

I wrote how Paul was killed on Wade’s 6-21-21 post, and how he prayed to God the same prayer he heard Stephen pray.

Paul said, “The first time I was brought before the judge, no one came with me. Everyone abandoned me. May it not be counted against them.” (2 Timothy 4:16)

I just read an article pointing to a survey done by The Economist in UK. Forty percent of Brits favor permanent masking while 26% favor closing pubs and casinos (permanently) and 19% favored permanent night time curfews, cause you know, the virus goes crazy after dark and being in the safety of your own home will protect you (sarcasm there……)

Link to a Tweet here: https://twitter.com/mattholehouse/status/1413155464632836100 You can get to The Economist from there, but to see the whole article you have to give them your email address and I was not feeling the give this morning.

Regardless, the authors of the article that I was reading commented on how “dystopian” the fear methods used to get people to do the lockdown were. Now, some people feel “traumatized” at the concept of giving up their masks.

We saw it time and time again — the elites would tell us to “wear the mask” and then with 24 hour be seen NOT wearing the mask (for e.g. Nancy Pelosi having her hair salon personally opened up for her or Barbara Boxer walking through the airport without a mask, or even the octogenarian physician going unmasked after throwing the first pitch). In my mind, no huge crime any of these behaviors. I do not think that they put themselves at huge risk but in a world where everyone was being told to cower in fear in their homes, yet they went about their privileged lives…..

In the beginning, before we had enough data to really understand this virus and thought the death rate might be as high as 10-20% for all comers, I was for the lock downs. Instead we now know that there are populations at risk, but the elites have continued to advocate punishing the population because, you know, an old plebe might choose to love on their family rather than live locked down in their nursing home for the rest of their limited life…..and that would somehow be a wrong decision.

In recently released data from the UK, 25 children under 18 died of COVID, of which 2/3 had underlying health conditions. Now, each of those deaths was tragic in it’s own right, although some of those children might have died regardless of COVID. In the same period, 124 children died of suicide and 268 died from trauma. With this information, there is discussion in the UK of offering vaccinations to at risk rather than all children realizing the risk /benefit for children may not be on the benefit side (since the risk to children is so low).

Back in August 2020 a person I knew told me that he had been to church. He had ALL the risk factors for doing poorly if he got COVID: age, cancer, heart disease, diabetes, kidney disease. I asked him if he masked. He did. I asked if the church members masked, they did not. He told me (paraphrased), “I am a dead man walking. I refuse to live what limited time I have on this earth in fear. God calls me to be at church and so I go. I want to be with my family, to love on my family. I want to see my community.” He died 6 weeks later. He did not die of COVID, but of one of his many other health problems. He taught me much. Even if he had died of COVID, I would have admired his life and final courage following the path that God called him to follow.

There was always doubt that locking down the healthy was going to be protective. There is a growing data set suggesting that it is not, but……the lockdowns continue, the insanity continues.

Scott Shaver,

You said, “the way Jesus was bounced between Herod and Chiaphis is an indicator that SOMEBODY knew he was innocent.”

That’s a new subject; what do you think who was responsible for Paul’s death?

Scott Shaver said...

Rex: I am not sure you can pin Paul's death on "those who abandoned him". But I do know that had Paul quit preaching Jesus his earthly life might have been longer. I see "lay not this sin to their charge" as a visceral expression of the Spirit-influenced desire to see ALL saved and brought to knowledge of God's truth along with an acute awareness of the temporal nature of life in general.

Hello WADE,

my understanding of a 'variant' is that it is a form of the Covid-19 that has mutated, and that the names of the various mutations are what is listed in Greek. I may be wrong. It wouldn't be the first time.

What makes the mutations of great concern is that there is always a question as to whether the vaccines being now effective will ALSO work on the mutated virus.

Another concern is if these mutations makes the virus MORE contagious, and/or more deadly.

Christiane said...

I hope people who don't mind 'dying for ______' will, at least, let their children be protected medically, as this is another moral issue altogether. All children are the Lord's, that we parents are their guardians means we will answer to God for how we have cared for our children.

Rex Ray said...

Scott Shaver,

I’ll try to refresh your memory by repeating what’s on Wade’s 6-21-21 Post that’s below:

Rex Ray said...Scott Shaver, Thanks. All Scripture not reference is from Acts written from NLT.

It’s important that Paul heard Steven’s prayer before he was killed: “…Lord don’t charge them with this sin…” (7:60) because Paul will repeat the same prayer before he died.

“…Jesus’ brothers said to him, “Leave here and go to Judea, where your followers can see your miracles! You can’t become famous if you hide like this! If you can do such wonderful things, show yourself to the world! For even his brothers didn’t believe in him.” (John 7:3-5)

Since James missed the teachings of Jesus, why was he selected to be the pastor of the Jerusalem church? Politics! (He was the brother of Jesus!)

JAMES WARNS PAUL HIS LIFE IS IN DANGER
“The next day Paul went with us to meet with James and the elders of the Jerusalem church…You know, dear brother, how many thousands of Jews have also believed, and they all follow the law of Moses very seriously. But the Jewish believers in Jerusalem have been told that you are teaching all the Jews who live among the Gentiles to turn their backs on the laws of Moses. They’ve heard that you teach them not to circumcise their children or follow other Jewish customs. What should we do? They will certainly hear that you have come.” (21:18-22)

Scott, I believe the thousands of Jews James referred to was his church. Paul was the hero of the Gentile churches. If his church killed Paul, James would lose control of the Gentile churches. Paul was in Jerusalem 3 days before he met James and the elders. This gave them time to come up with a ‘plan’ because in the same breath they asked “What should we do?”, they had the answer.

“Here’s what we want you to do. We have four men who have completed their vow. Go with them to the Temple and join them in the purification ceremony, paying for them to have their heads ritually shaved. Then everyone will know that the rumors are all false and that you yourself observe the Jewish laws.” (21:23-24)

Scott, James wants Paul to go to the Temple where the Jewish Leaders are! “Five different times the Jewish leaders gave me the thirty-nine lashes. Three times I was beaten with rods. Once I was stoned…” (Second Corinthians 11:24-25)

Scott, Paul goes to the Temple 7 days to complete his vow. Maybe because his head was shaved, no one recognized him. There’s no proof of what I believe that James told a cohort to identify Paul to someone that wouldn’t recognize him.

“The seven days were almost ended when some Jews from the province of Asia saw Paul in the Temple and roused a mob against him…” (21:27)
“As they were trying to kill him, word reached the commander of the Roman regiment…He immediately called out his soldiers and officers and ran down among the crowd. When the mob saw the commander and troops coming, they stopped beating Paul.” (31-32)

Scott, at Paul’s first trial before Felix only his accusers were present. James and the elders were absent in capture 24. (Paul will refer to their absence in 2 Timothy.)

Book of Second Timothy Overview - Insight for Living Ministries
“Paul wrote 2 Timothy from a dark and damp Roman prison cell, just before his death in AD 67.”

“…The time of my death is near.” (2 Timothy 4:6)

Scott, remember the prayer Paul heard Steven pray?

“The first time I was brought before the judge, no one came with me. Everyone abandoned me. MAY IT NOT BE COUNTED AGAINST THEM.” (2 Timothy 4:16)

I believe he was referring to the ones that called him “…dear brother…” (Acts 21:20)

Scott Shaver said...

Rex:

What do you want me to say? It is an interesting perspective.

Scott Shaver said...

Rex, if the congregation of James was responsible for killing Paul, all I can say is it was a mistake that Christians have made with each other throughout history.

Rex Ray said...

Scott,

Why are you twisting the facts that the congregation of James was responsible for killing Paul?

Have you read where the Holy Spirit said the Jewish Leaders would imprison Paul?

“…Agabus, who had the gift of prophecy…took Paul’s belt…the Holy Spirit declares…the owner of this belt be bond bound by the Jewish leaders in Jerusalem and turned over to the Gentiles.” (Acts 21:10-11 NLT)

James didn’t want his congregation killing Paul because he would lose control over the Christian Gentiles, so he tricked Paul into taking a vow in the Temple where the Jewish leaders were.

Scott Shaver said...

Not arguing Rex. Just don't have a dog in that particular nuance of analysis and interpretation. Not as studied as you.

Scott,

I like the way you described the way James got rid of Paul; “James served up Paul.”

(Tradition states Paul was beheaded in Rome.)

Paul preached ‘Jesus plus nothing’, while James preached works. With Paul out of the way, James wrote:

“So whatever you say or whatever you do, remember that you will be judged by the law that sets you free. There will be no mercy for those who have not shown mercy to others. But if you have been merciful, God will be merciful when he judges you.” (James 2:12-13 NLT)

3 "Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

4Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.

5Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.a

6Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.

7Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy.

8Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.

9Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called sons of God.

10 Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

11 Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you, and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of Me. 12 Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven; for in the same way they persecuted the prophets before you."

Christiane said...

That the 'Beatitudes', the 'blessing(s)'
are a part of the Holy Gospels that testify to Christ the Revealer of God
IS something to be reckoned in how those who say they believe then at least TRY to obey the Word of the Lord.

There are no 'get out of hell free' cards. That is a false gospel. Our salvation wasn't 'free', no. As the prophet Zechariah foretold:

'And I will pour on the house of David, and on the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the spirit of grace and of supplications: and they shall look on me whom they have pierced, and they shall mourn for him, as one mourns for his only son, and shall be in bitterness for him, as one that is in bitterness for his firstborn.'

If people think that it costs nothing for them to go to heaven, they need to look at a Crucifix. As was said, this:
'This thought should keep us humble. We are sinners but we do not know how great. HE ALONE KNOWS WHO DIED FOR OUR SINS.' (John Henry Newman)
